Writing contests are a great way of honing your skills, and with such a lot of them about there is no reason why you should not achieve some sort of success in the field. Finding teen writing contests is easy – look to your favourite magazines, to your favourite websites, or even run the phrase through a search engine, but what you need to know is what the rules are, how you need to present your entry and – most important of all – what you have to write!

It also lists magazines where teens can submit their work – another very useful resource that will help you to find your feet in the writing world.
What you must do is look at the entry requirements for any writing contests that you choose to enter, or the submission requirements for magazines. These will be available at the website of the competition or in the magazine you are reading.
Generally, the requirements will include details of word count – the length of the piece – and subject; some will allow you to pick any subject while some, such as Misfits Writing Contest, are specific genre – this one being science fiction and horror.
There will also be requirements with regard to formatting your entry, deadlines and more, and reading these thoroughly is essential. Furthermore, most competitions will advise you as to the area son which you will be judged, and these can include the obvious such as grammar and presentation, or the less immediately obvious such as originality. Make sure you work to the theme provided.
Entering teen writing contests, or submitting work to a magazine, can be a rewarding and interesting way of gaining writing experience and, who knows, you may eve win a prize!
