I need to Write A Book report for the book (Memoirs of a geisha).
A book report is an exposition giving a short summary of a book and a reaction to it. While it includes some details, a book report is usually tailored to its readers. Emphasis usually falls on aspects of the book related to the subject matter seen in an academic group of studies. Modern schools have brought different types of projects, like book covers, where one must draw a book cover of the book they read and ‘sell the book’ with a paragraph on the back.
Expository writing is a type of writing, the purpose of which is to inform, explain, describe, or define the author’s subject to the reader. Expository text is meant to deposit information and is the most frequently used type of writing by students in colleges and universities. A well-written exposition remains focused on its topic and lists events in chronological order. Examples of this type of writing are cooking instructions, driving directions and instructions on performing a task. Key words such as first, after, next, then and last usually signal sequential writing. Second-person pronouns may be used in such writing, if needed; for example, in a how-to essay a writer may choose to personalize the instructions with “you.” However, the use of first-person pronouns should be avoided. Expository essays will not reveal the opinion of the writer. Exposition is a type of oral or written discourse that is used to explain, describe, give information or inform. The creator of an expository text can not assume that the reader or listener has prior knowledge or prior understanding of the topic that is being discussed. One important point to keep in mind for the author is to try to use words that clearly show what they are talking about rather then blatantly telling the reader what is being discussed.
However, you could be meaning that you are asking about an Explication de Texte. Which is a French formalist method of literary analysis that allows for limited reader response, similar to close reading in the English-speaking literary tradition. The method involves a detailed yet relatively objective examination of structure, style, imagery, and other aspects of a work. It was particularly advocated by Gustave Lanson.
It is primarily a pedagogical tool, similar to a formal book report.
A simple format for writing an Explication de Texte is this:
1. A brief overview of what happened literally— not figuratively
2. The structuring of the literature (e.g. Was it a sonnet? What kind?) and the tone throughout the piece
3. The poetic devices used throughout the literature (e.g. personification)
4. Conclusion
