1748 Books $14.13 Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding is a book by the Scottish empiricist philosopher David Hume, published in 1748. It was a simplification of an earlier effort, Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature, published anonymously in London in 173940. Hume was disappointed with the reception of the Treatise, which “fell stillborn from the press,” as he put it, and so tried again to disseminate his ideas to the public by writing a shorter and more polemical work. The end product of his labours was the Enquiry. The Enquiry dispensed with much of the material from the Treatise, in favor of clarifying and emphasizing its most important aspects. For example, Hume’s views on personal identity, do not appear. However, more vital propositions, such as Hume’s argument for the role of habit in a theory of knowledge, are retained. This book has proven highly influential, both in the years that would immediately follow and today. Immanuel Kant points to it as the book which woke him from his self-described “dogmatic slumber” The Enquiry is widely regarded as a classic in modern philosophical literature. The argument of the Enquiry proceeds by a series of incremental steps, separated into chapters which logically succeed one another. After expounding his epistemology, Hume explains how to apply his principles to specific topics. 1. Of the different species of philosophy In the first section of the Enquiry, Hume provides a rough introduction to philosophy as a whole. For Hume, philosophy can be split into two general parts: natural philosophy and the philosophy of human nature (or, as he calls it, “moral philosophy”). The latter investigates both actions and thoughts. He emphasizes in this |

A First Course in Factor Analysis $90 The goal of this book is to foster a basic understanding of factor analytic techniques so that readers can use them in their own research and critically evaluate their use by other researchers. Both the underlying theory and correct application are emphasized. The theory is presented through the mathematical basis of the most common factor analytic models and several methods used in factor analysis. On the application side, considerable attention is given to the extraction problem, the rotation problem, and the interpretation of factor analytic results. Hence, readers are given a background of understanding in the the theory underlying factor analysis and then taken through the steps in executing a proper analysis — from the initial problem of design through choice of correlation coefficient, factor extraction, factor rotation, factor interpretation, and writing up results. This revised edition includes introductions to newer methods — such as confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling — that have revolutionized factor analysis in recent years. To help remove some of the mystery underlying these newer, more complex methods, the introductory examples utilize EQS and LISREL. Updated material relating to the validation of the Comrey Personality Scales also has been added. Finally, program disks for running factor analyses on either an IBM-compatible PC or a mainframe with FORTRAN capabilities are available. The intended audience for this volume includes talented but mathematically unsophisticated advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and research workers seeking to acquire a basic understanding of the principles supporting factor analysis. Disks are available in 5.25″ and 3.5″ formats for both mainframe programs written in Fortran and IBM PCs and compatibles running a math co-processor. |

A Garden Of Peace: A Medley In Quietude (1920) $36.76 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free.Excerpt from book:Section 3was smothered out of sight in the foliage about it, for a poplar towered above the lilac, and was well furnished. I remarked to my man that I was afraid our blackbirds had deserted us this year, and he agreed with me. But one day early in June I saw the cat look wistfully up the lilac. ‘He hasn’t forgotten the nest that was there,’ I said. ‘ But I’m sure he’ll find out in which of the neighbouring gardens the new one has been built.’ But every day he came out and gazed up as if into the depths of the foliage above our heads. ‘Ornithology is his hobby,’ said I, ‘but he’s not so smart as I fancied, or he would be hustling around the other gardens where he should know murder can be done with impunity.’. The next day my man brought out a pair of steps, and placing them firmly under the lilac, ascended to the level of where the nest had been in former years. At once there came the warning chuckle of the blackbirds from the boughs of the poplar. ‘ Why, bless my soul! There are four young ones in the nest, and they’re nearly ready to fly,’ sang out the investigator from above, and the parents corroborated every word from the poplar. I was amazed. It seemed impossible that I could have sat writing under that tree day after day for two months, watching for signs that the birds were there, and yet fail to notice them at their work either of hatching or feeding. It was not carelessness or indifference they had eluded; it was vigilance. I had looked daily for their coming, and there was no fine day in which I was not in the garden for four hours, practically immovable, and the nest was not more than ten feet from the ground, yet I had remained in ignorance of all that was going on above my head! With such an experience I do not think that it becomes me to sneer too definitely at the stup… |

A Walk Toward Jesus $10.58 Is the wilderness walk an important step in a Christian’s life? You bet! A failure to recognize it will leave you standing astonished asking, “Why did that happen to me?” Yet, we never really teach or preach about this part in Church. We have fallen into a period where Churches must either be entertaining to keep the pews full, or make us feel good so our sins do not “appear” so sinful. Because of this, vital key steps that lead us to purify the wood, hay, and stubble from our hearts, so maturity takes place within our soul, is lacking from today’s teaching. It is not okay to leave off parts of the Bible for any reason because we are talking about eternity here! There is a difference between the WHOLE truth being presented in love, verses when a little bit of truth mixes in with a worldview so just to placate someone’s feelings. Is that temporary placation more important than eternal truths? It should always be, “the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” so God can help you!Asking forgiveness is one thing, but transformation is another. We are to be transformed by the Word, Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. What does that really mean to you? How does one “transform” according to the Word of God?Pamela is married and she and her husband have three children. By the Lord’s guidance, they founded a home fellowship, The Well A Church of Fellowship, in Houston, TX. In 2002, she suffered a life changing injury while writing this book and completing it in 2010 is a victory in Christ Jesus. |
