How To Get a Literary Agent

Many aspiring authors yearn and burn to see their novels on the shelves of their local bookstore. They spend years polishing their manuscript, and then, when it’s finished, stumble to a halt. What comes next? How do you get your book into the hands of an editor who will love it and help you improve it until it’s ready to be printed? The answer is simple: you need an agent. In this article we’ll take a brief look at what agents do and how to get one.

First: what do agents do for you that earns them their 15% commission? First and foremost, they know the tastes and desires of all the major Publishers, and know whom to approach and how best to present your novel to them. Second, they are master negotiaters, so that once an editor has expressed interest, they can drive the price of purchase as highas possible. Finally, they have connections with foreign publishers and film makers so as to best help you leverage your novel as possible should interest in those departments grow.

How do you get an agent? First, create a list of potential agents by looking at Books similar to yours and that were successful, and then find out whom those authors had as agents. Once you have their names, prepare a query letter to send to them. Your query letter should be one page, and should start with a concise hook as to why your novel is brilliant and engaging, and then should speak briefly of yourself and your qualifications if relevant.

If your agent likes your query, they should then ask to read a few chapters and maybe ask for a synopsis. If that works out, they should then ask to read the whole manuscript, and if they still love your novel they will then ask to represent you. From there, be sure to ask them what their vision for the futureof your book is, how they envision your career developing, and to which Publishing Houses they intend on sending it. Best of luck from there!
