Lulu self-publishing…good or no?
I want to use Lulu to Publish a novel that I’ll be done with in another month or so. If I use a self-Publisher (such as Lulu) will I still be able to send it to “regular” publishing companies in the future (e.g. Random House) or does Lulu “own” your work once you send it to them?
Thanks.
It’s extremely rare for a “real” publisher to consider a vanity-press novel, even if you retain your rights to the material. (Which you would, at Lulu.)
Self-publishing is not the way to go with fiction. Why? Because it won’t sell, no matter how good it is, no matter how hard you work to promote it. Your total sales will be right about 2/3 the number of friends, family, and close work colleagues you have. Usually it’s somewhere between 45 and 65, including copies you bought yourself, to give as gifts.
Compare that to real publishing, where sales in the thousands are considered poor-to-adequate, depending on the genre.
So polish that novel up until it’s better than a lot already in bookstores, and aim for a “regular” publisher from the get-go. Best of luck with it.
