do you think that artists and mental illness or mental illness and creativity(art and writing) could be relate?

i’m writing an argumentative paper on this subject. I can only find sources that say the two are related. Can anyone argue that they are not? I need to know both sides. If anyone can give me any sources on either side, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

This is a good question and I think it goes along with people believing the creative arts is a ‘genius’ instead of a learned skill. It puts the blame on some inner talent and they can excuse themselves from seriously trying. If anything mental illness for an artist or author is like drugs are to a performer, they come with the territory while doing nothing but distracting one from their work. Only discipline and repetition leads to real skill, ask Stephen King, or read Anne Lamot’s book “Bird By Bird”, autobiography about how incredible difficult it was for her to become one of the nations biggest authors and how she struggled through drugs and depression.

Why they are related? I believe it’s because we have to identitify with being mentally ill, an ‘outsider to the norms of society’ to actually sit down and put ourselves through the process of learning. It takes an act of desperation, for many to get the ball rolling until through time it becomes an act of passion, as well as being enjoyable.

Oh and as a side note… Who do you know that can’t be diagnosed with at least one mental illness, who wasn’t abused as a child.

It’s just that if they are famous we tend to look at it more closely.
