Advice On Writing A Book

advice on writing a book
Advice for Writing A Book in another time period?

I Want To Write A Book that is set in Ancient Egypt and have done a lot of research, but I don’t have an Phd in Egyptology. I was wondering if it is still possible to write a book on a time period with extensive research instead of actually going to school for it. I want to make it as historically accurate as possible, any advice?

If you are going to write fiction, of course you don’t need a Phd in Egyptology so long as you have done sufficient research that your story will be believable and able to withstand the scrutiny of those who have similar backgrounds to yours. However, if you are planning to write nonfiction, a book which is intended to be historically valid and which you would hope to have respected by the scholarly community, then you should write with great care, citing your sources, including a bibliography, footnotes, etc. Doubtlessly, you know the requirements. If fiction is to be your vehicle, I think that your objective should be more to write a compelling story than to be absolutely flawless in the historical details. Whatever your goal, good luck!

Excerpt: Some Thoughts Concerning Education is a 1693 treatise on education written by the English philosopher John Locke. For over a century, it was the most important philosophical work on education in England. It was translated into almost all of the major written European languages during the eighteenth century, and nearly every European writer on education after Locke, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau, acknowledged its influence. In his Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690), Locke outlined a new theory of mind, contending that the child’s mind was a tabula rasa or “blank slate”; that is, it did not contain any innate ideas. Some Thoughts Concerning Education explains how to educate that mind using three distinct methods: the development of a healthy body; the formation of a virtuous character; and the choice of an appropriate academic curriculum. Locke wrote the letters that would eventually become Some Thoughts for an aristocratic friend, but his advice had a broader appeal since his educational principles allowed women and the lower classes to aspire to the same kind of character as the aristocrats for whom Locke originally intended the work. Rather than writing a wholly original philosophy of education, Locke, it seems, deliberately attempted to popularize several strands of seventeenth-century educational reform at the same time as introducing his own ideas. English writers such as John Evelyn, John Aubrey, John Eachard, and John Milton had previously advocated “similar reforms in curriculum and teaching methods,” but they had not succeeded in reach… More:

A Kite in the Wind: Fiction Writers on Their Craft

A Kite in the Wind: Fiction Writers on Their Craft

$53

A Kite in the Windis an anthology of essays by 20 veteran writers and master teachers. While the contributors offer specific, practical advice on such fundamental aspects of craft as characterization, character names, the first person point of view, and unreliable narrators, they also give extended, thoughtful consideration to more sophisticated topics, including “imminence,” or the power of a sense of beginning; creating and maintaining tension; “lushness”; and the deliberate manipulation of information to create particular effects. The essays inA Kite in the Windbegin as personal investigations — attempts to understand why a decision in a particular story or novel seemed unsuccessful; to define a quality or problem that seemed either unrecognized or unsatisfactorily defined; to understand what, despite years of experience as a fiction writer, resisted comprehension; and to pursue haunting, even unanswerable questions.Unlike a how-to book, the anthology is less an instruction manual than it is an intimate visit with twenty very different writers as they explore topics that excite, intrigue, and even puzzle them. Each discussion uses specific examples and illustrations, including both canonical stories and novels and writing less frequently discussed, from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, by both American and international authors. The contributors share their hard-earned insights for beginning and advanced writers with humility, wit, and compassion. The first section of the book focuses on narration, with particular attention paid to various kinds of narrators; the second, on strategic creation and presentation of character; the third, on some of the roles of the visual, beginning with establishing setting; and the fourth, on structural and organizational issues, from movement through time to the manipulation of information to create mystery and suspense.
