Texas Possibly Joining The PAC 10 (Can U Say PAC 11 ???) … Why? … Why Not …?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/george_schroeder/02/12/pac-10-expansion/index.html?utm_source=bleacherreport.com

I just finished reading this article. Not a bad read … but probably highly unlikely. What reason would the Longhorns have for joining the Pac 10? In what way would it benefit the school? If so personally I think the Pac 10 needs Texas a lot more than Texas needs the Pac 10. For one it would improve the recruiting for the other universities in the conference just by the prestige alone (Texas becoming a member … and kids seeing they will get to play them yearly … It actually would bring more excitement to the conference … not a bad coup)

What’s in it for Texas???

Thanks and thumbs up to all who answer! Just give me time to get back and read the answers.
There are some great and fantastic answers! All of them are good … this will be a tough one to pick.

Thanks!

I gotta get to work.

First and foremost we all know this is a long shot to begin with, especially since Texas already turned down the Pac-10 in 1996. But even if there is no chance to show they’re serious for the t.v. deals they do need to go after Texas if just for show. I’m a huge Arizona Wildcat fan, and those I tend to follow the rumors and news of the conference and the subject of expansion is intriguing but also brings up a defensive side as well. Right now the Big East and Pac-10 are the only two of the “Big Six” conferences who can say without a doubt there league champ is a real league champ since both play a round robin for conference play, the Big 10, SEC, ACC and Big 12 can’t make that claim as every year each school only playes 8 conference games so in the Big 12, SEC and ACC there are four conferece members that teams like Florida, LSU, Va Tech, Oklahoma and Texas don’t play, yeah they have big games you get situations like 2008 in the Big 12 or 2002 in the Big 10. However from a logical stand point expansion makes sense for the Pac-10 as it would help to insure a better t.v. deal with a conference title game and would take away the advantage the other conferences get in the polls with that one more game.

My problem right now with the topic of expansion is everyone seems to be focusing on football when they throw out teams like Boise State or Utah, but these schools are a joke when you compare the rest of the athletic arsenal the Pac-10 holds in sports like basketball (not this year but usually), baseball, softball, swimming, track, golf, gymnastics, women’s soccer, men’s soccer and they don’t take into consideration the educational aspects the conference holds, I mean hell Standford and Cal-Berkley pretty much have the same educational standards as Ivy League schools, Oregon and Arizona are huge in research and developement, and the other 6 aren’t sloaches either considering their public schools. Again Texas would fit in well with the rest of this as they have dominant sports programs all the way around and have a very standard of education, but again it’s not going to happen, so that leaves in my opinion the best choices of BYU (and contrary to the SI writer thinks a religous school is a option, just look at how Notre Dame and the Big East) and UNLV, I personally think Colorado would be a waste of time, and this would open the oppurtunity for both Boise State and Fresno State to joing the Mountain West, and thus making the MWC a stronger conference as well.
